People always ask why NSDP began...In truth, it began as a way to come together as dancers with careers missing performance and choreography.

In 2019, our founder, Alexa Guajardo, found herself burnt out, uninspired, and unmotivated during the transition from a performer to a teacher. Feeling lost, she pondered how she could find balance between her dream career of teaching dance with her passion of performing with and choreographing for established dancers. Research into a "glass slipper" company fell flat, and that's when the idea for this project began.

In the first three months of 2020, Alexa got to work on the logistics of running a company, reached out to old colleagues, peers, and coworkers, and got contracts drafted for the inaugural dancers of the project. A week after the welcome meeting, COVID-19 shut the entire world down.

In hindsight, this slow entrance was a blessing in disguise for the company. It allowed North Star Dance Project to solidify its purpose and it forced us to get creative in rehearsals and in ways we could build and reach an audience without the opportunity for face-to-face events.In it's first 6 seasons, North Star Dance Project has built a dedicated audience, and has attracted dancers from all over DFW in many different stages of their dance journeys. Our company members are teachers, free-lance choreographers, parents, adjudicators, collegiate students, and so much more. We are so proud to be building our rapport in the metroplex as an inclusive space for all dance performers, and we are humbled by the continuous support from those around us.

North Star Dance Project is where dancers meet to indulge or renew their passion for dance. As a collaborative, inclusive, and accessible dance company, we aim to be the missing place between the educational & highly competitive worlds of dance.

We believe dance has the power to heal, empower, inspire, and inform, and that creativity is best shared with others. All of our dancers have opportunity to set their own choreography on the members of the company, and to perform in several pieces per season. That level of creative opportunity is truly what sets us apart from others. We are a company in which every dancer is given the space they need to thrive.

So why the North Star?

The project began with a single dancer feeling lost in her journey. The North Star has been a guiding light to humankind for thousands of years. It shines brightly every night, providing a sense of comfort, direction, and purpose to all those beneath it. North Star Dance Project is on a mission to be that same kind of guiding light in the dance community. We want to lead dancers back home, back to their passion.
